Executive Director Job Announcement
Position Summary: The Philadelphia Student Union (PSU) based in West Philadelphia, is a community based youth organizing and leadership development organization led by high school and middle school aged youth with adult support. PSU is national leader in the youth organizing movement with school based, citywide, statewide, and national organizing campaigns and strategies, a well-developed media and communications infrastructure, and supportive programs and services for members. The Executive Director will be working with a team of leaders comprised of students, staff and board members. More information about PSU can be found at www.phillystudentunion.org.
Key Responsibilities: The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing an annual budget of $450,000, and approximately 4-5 full time staff members and 2 consultants. To sustain the work of PSU, the ED is responsible for maintaining relationships with funders as well as seeking out a mix of fundraising sources from foundations to individual donors. This will be important to the success of this role and sustainability of the organization.
Leadership and Organizational Development ● Create and execute short and long term strategic program and organizational plans. ● Work with program staff and PSU students to define short and long term program goals. ● Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, school officials, local/national coalition partners and other PSU supporters. ● Maintain a visible presence in the community, citywide, statewide and nationwide for PSU. ● Report to, interact with and support PSU’s Board of Directors; act as liaison between Board and staff. ● Build and maintain plan for staff development offerings internally (trainings, political education study) and external (organizing and facilitation trainings)
Development and Fundraising ● Work with Development Coordinator/Consultants and Board to cultivate and monitor PSU’s fundraising strategy, including foundation grants, local grants and individual donations. ● Work with Individual Donor Coordinator/Consultant to maintain communication with donor contacts, cultivate donor prospects, and work in conjunction with the individual donor campaign. ● Engage and collaborate with PSU’s Board on fundraising including reporting scheduling and editing support as needed.
Fiscal Management ● Collaborate with the Finance Coordinator/Consultant to prepare and manage PSU’s annual operating budgets. ● Work with Finance Coordinator/Consultant to oversee financial management system; work in partnership with the PSU Board to provide fiscal oversight and financial reporting.
Staff Supervision and Coordination ● Provide leadership and support to PSU staff on programming, organizing and development. ● Support staff development and accountability, innovation, and a spirit of collaboration within PSU’s staff and among PSU’s partners.
Qualifications: The Executive Director candidate must possess a passion for the mission and work of the Philadelphia Student Union, nonprofit management and a strong leadership experience. In addition, a history of building rapport with staff, students and Board members, fundraising and financial management skills are also desired. Background and knowledge of large urban public education systems and issues, social justice work, community organizing, positive youth development, and/or nonprofit networks is strongly preferred.
Experience with young people and youth development programs in cities like Philadelphia is a must. Candidates should possess strong writing and public speaking skills, as well as the ability to give voice to the issues affecting the students and families PSU serves.
Successful passing of PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Clearance required.
