How to Opt Out of High School Military Recruitment
It’s the start of a new school year. Here’s what you need to know about military recruitment and how you can Opt Out.
The federal and state governments require that The School District automatically release your name, gender, address, telephone number, and school name to military recruiters (unless you fill out a student opt out form). Please note that you may sign and return the form yourself since a parent signature is not required. The signed form must be returned to your advisor by October 22, 2010. Click here to download the form & directions on how to submit it.
For more info and to download Opt Out forms in several languages, go to the Opt Out section of the Philadelphia School District’s website.
Turning in this Opt Out form to your school advisor or principal is a good first step. But it will not prevent national military recruitment mailings from coming to your house. To block this, you need to Opt Out of the national JAMRS (Joint Advertising Marketing & Research Services) military recruitment database of 16-to-25-year-olds. You can do this by printing the Opt Out form (download it here), completing it, and mailing it to the following address:
Joint Advertising and Marketing Research & Studies Office (JAMRS) Attention: Opt Out 4040 North Fairfax Drive, Ste. 200 Arlington, VA 22203
Additionally, the Department of Defense suggested writing “RETURN TO SENDER” on any other mail you get from military recruiters and putting it back in the mail to be returned.
